Deciding to do it yourself? Here are some hints that will make the process a little more fun:
Choosing your paint:
Choosing paint involves choosing a color, a type, a finish and a brand. It can be overwhelming, but with a base of knowledge you can make a choice that is right for your specific project. It is best to know exactly what you want before you go into the store, so that you can walk out with only what you need.
Color:
Go beforehand and pick out paint swatches which you can take home and look at in the room to be painted. Remember that the color on the small swatch will look much different when it is covering an entire room. Colors often appear much more brilliant, meaning that a light blue that almost looks white, will definitely appear blue when painted on multiple walls.
When choosing a color, remember that some colors are more difficult to paint than others. You'll notice that some colors are marked "low-hide" on the swatches. This indicates that you will have to put more coats of paint on for the color to be solid. Reds are one of the most difficult colors to paint, and it often takes three or more coats to create a solid satisfying affect.
When choosing a color, take into account the existing color of the walls. Painting a dark color over a light color, and the other way around, can prove time consuming. When painting a dark color over a light color, you might consider purchasing a tinted primer that will get you one step closer to darkening your walls.
Type - Alkyd vs. Latex:
Oil based house paint is referred to as alkyd, while water based house paint is commonly called latex or acrylic. The main differences between the two are their drying processes, their finishes, and the ease or difficulty of clean up. RollerGirl Painting prefers to work with latex paint. It is easier to use, easier to clean up, and doesn't produce the toxic chemical off-gases of oil paint.
